Partnered with Abt Associates to adapt the hospital-based patient safety training program TeamSTEPPS®, to apply to the long-term care setting.

The national patient safety training program, Team Strategies and Tools to Enhance Performance and Patient Safety (TeamSTEPPS®), was developed by the Department of Defense Patient Safety Program and the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) to train hospital staff in teamwork and communication. While this evidence-based training program helps to improve patient outcomes by cultivating teamwork and promoting culture change in the hospital setting, a similar training specifically designed for long-term care providers did not exist.

Working with Abt Associates, Qualidigm adapted the original hospital-based training to the unique complexities of the long term care setting. To do this, Qualidigm translated the TeamSTEPPS® text and associated training materials, language, scenarios, examples and discussions to apply to the long-term care provider audience.

The newly adapted materials include four video vignettes produced by Qualidigm which highlight TeamSTEPPS® skills and techniques. Qualidigm also developed 31 specialty scenarios that illustrate the TeamSTEPPS® concepts in the long-term care environment.

The videos were filmed in a Connecticut and MA nursing home and will be distributed nationally. The videos and training materials/ program were also piloted in a Connecticut nursing home, and helped inform the final curriculum. TeamSTEPPS® for long term care was made available to the public in 2012, all materials are accessible through the AHRQ website.
